Chester holds no Christmas lights switch-on ceremony. The lights come on street by street as the 12 Days of Christmas Parade passes, listed for Thursday 19 November 2026.
If you are looking for the night the Mayor throws a switch and Chester’s Christmas lights come on, there isn’t one. Chester has no switch-on ceremony. The lights come on street by street as a parade walks through the city, which is why searching for a time and a place gets you nowhere.
Marketing Cheshire’s visitor site puts it plainly: Chester’s lights “will adorn the streets throughout the season”, and “during the 12 Days of Christmas Parade each street will be illuminated as the parade passes through” (chester.com). The Town Hall Square tree goes up beforehand and waits for the parade to reach it.
So the date you actually want is the parade date.
The 12 Days of Christmas Parade: Thursday 19 November 2026
Chester BID, which sponsors the parade, has it listed for Thursday 19 November 2026, from 7pm, free, described as community groups and local artists parading across the city centre with a possible visit from Father Christmas (Chester BID). The listing was last updated on 2 September 2026, so it is a live entry for this year rather than a leftover.
That fits the rest of the calendar. The Chester Christmas Market opens on Wednesday 18 November 2026, and the parade has run the evening after the market opens for years. In 2025 the market opened on Wednesday 19 November and the parade was Thursday 20 November.
The council has not published its 2026 festive programme yet. Last year’s went out on 11 November, eight days before the market opened, so expect the official version in the second week of November.
The route, from the council’s 2025 announcement: the parade starts on Bridge Street at 7pm, travels towards the Cross, along Eastgate Street, into St Werburgh Street, past the Town Hall, and finishes in Watergate Street. Father Christmas joins it. Stand anywhere along that line and the lights above you come on as it reaches you.
The other three parades are not dated yet
Chester runs four winter parades, not one. Only the first has a 2026 date. Here is last year’s calendar, from the council’s Christmas celebrations in Chester release of 11 November 2025, with the likely 2026 equivalent alongside.
| Parade | 2025 | Likely 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 12 Days of Christmas | Thu 20 Nov, 7pm, from Bridge Street | Thu 19 Nov, confirmed by Chester BID |
| Lantern Parade | Thu 27 Nov, 7pm, from Town Hall Square | Thu 26 Nov, not confirmed |
| Winter Watch | Thu 4 and Thu 11 Dec, 7pm, Town Hall Square | Thu 3 and Thu 10 Dec, not confirmed |
| Roman Saturnalia | Thu 11 Dec, 6.30pm, from the Grosvenor Museum | Thu 10 Dec, not confirmed |
The 2026 column is our arithmetic, nothing more. Every one of these parades falls on a Thursday, so shifting last year’s dates back by one day gets you the probable answer, but the council has confirmed none of them.
Watch out for one trap. Anyone copying “Thursday 4 December” out of last year’s coverage is wrong twice over: 4 December 2026 is a Friday. If you see a 2026 listing with a day name attached to a December date, check it against a calendar before you plan around it.
The Winter Watch is worth turning out for. The cast is a 1400s city watch of ghosts and monsters, Jack Frost, an angel, fire skeletons, a dragon, ice queens, devils and cooks, led through the streets by the Karamba Samba band. On parade nights the market stays open until 8pm and the park and ride runs late, with the last bus from Foregate Street at 9pm.
Chester Cathedral: the trees are confirmed
The cathedral’s Christmas Tree Festival is running again in 2026. More than 80 trees decorated by local schools and businesses fill the building “from the end of November”, and this year’s theme is the Spirit of Christmas (Chester Cathedral). The cathedral has now published the visitor dates: 25 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, free on Sundays and for under 5s, last entry 5.30pm (event page); see our Christmas Tree Festival page. It has also published a deadline: schools and businesses that want a tree must register interest by 26 October 2026, and trees are allocated first come, first served.
Switch-ons that do exist, across the borough
Chester has no ceremony, but the towns around it do. None has confirmed a 2026 date yet. These are the most recent confirmed arrangements, so you know what you are waiting for.
- Ellesmere Port. The town’s switch-on is a real event with a lantern parade. In 2025 the Mayor of Ellesmere Port, Councillor Katie Kendrick OBE, switched the lights on from Civic Square on Friday 28 November, with activities from 4pm to 6pm: schoolchildren parading with lanterns behind Chester’s Karamba Samba band, the giant Queen of Light puppet, the Stag, Unicorn, Jack Frost and Angel made by artist Russell Kirk, free children’s rides, choirs, food and Father Christmas (council, 21 November 2025). In earlier years it has landed on the first Thursday in December instead, so the day of the week is not fixed.
- Northwich. The Christmas Extravaganza is the biggest daytime event of the three. In 2025 it ran on Saturday 29 November from 11am, with free Christmas crazy golf on High Street, a funfair on Apple Market Place, a craft and food market along Witton Street, giant snow globes, free games and Santa’s sleigh (Visit Northwich).
- Winsford, Frodsham, Neston, Helsby, Hartford, Tarvin, Willaston and Davenham all hold their own switch-ons or Christmas markets across the last week of November and the first weekend of December. The council’s borough-wide festive round-up, published in mid to late November each year, is the only place they appear together.
Getting in and parking
Parade nights are Thursday evenings, and the market is open until 8pm on them, so the city centre car parks fill from about 5pm. Little Roodee and the Frodsham Street multi-storey are the usual overflow, and park and ride runs late on parade Thursdays. Tariffs are on our parking in Chester page. Check roadworks and travel before you drive in: Bridge Street, Eastgate Street and St Werburgh Street are all on the parade route and close to traffic around it.
Also on this year’s calendar: Grotto on the Square and the Town Hall grotto, the Storyhouse pantomime, and Lanterns and Light at Chester Zoo from 13 November.
What we will add
We will check the council’s news page and Chester BID’s listings through October and November and add the confirmed dates for the Lantern, Winter Watch and Saturnalia parades and the switch-on dates for Ellesmere Port, Northwich and Winsford as each is announced.
