No fireworks in Chester on New Year's Eve. Four ticketed parties from £70 (£27 a child), two gastropubs open until 11pm, and last trains from about 8.30pm.

Chester has no free public New Year’s Eve celebration. We found no council fireworks display or city-centre countdown for Thursday 31 December 2026. The city’s big fireworks night this year is on Saturday 31 October. What you can book is a ticketed party at one of the hotels in and near the city. If you are travelling home by train, check your last train before you book. On New Year’s Eve they finish early.

The quick answer

  • No public fireworks or countdown in Chester on 31 December. The city’s fireworks are the Lord Mayor’s display at the Racecourse, this year on 31 October.
  • Ticketed parties from £70 a head: Crowne Plaza Chester £115, Grosvenor Pulford £135 or £70, and a Grosvenor Pulford family party at £70 an adult, £27 a child.
  • Last trains on New Year’s Eve 2025: Merseyrail about 8.30pm, and Transport for Wales started closing down from 9pm.

Why there is no public event

Cheshire West and Chester’s Christmas and New Year pages cover council opening hours, bins and the tip, and list no event. Visit Chester and Cheshire’s New Year’s Eve listings, checked on 24 September 2026, are all hotel parties, pubs and tribute nights. None is a free public display in the district. For fireworks in Chester, go to the Lord Mayor’s display at the Racecourse on Saturday 31 October, covered on our Chester fireworks and Bonfire Night page.

If a public event is announced, we will add it here.

Ticketed parties in and around Chester

Crowne Plaza Chester is the only one inside the city centre, on Trinity Street near the walls. Its New Year’s Eve Ball has a Champagne and canapé reception, a five-course dinner, a party band and the hotel’s resident DJ. The hotel says it is “subject to minimum numbers”, so it may not run if too few tickets sell.

Grosvenor Pulford Hotel and Spa is on the Wrexham Road south of the city. It runs three separate parties:

  • New Year’s Eve at Palm Court: a glass of Champagne at 7pm, a five-course menu with coffee and petit fours, pianist and vocalist Andy Clark from 7pm to 10pm, then the Harmony vocal duo counting down to midnight until 1am.
  • New Year’s Eve at Nelson’s: bubbly at 7pm, a three-course buffet and the resident DJ until 1am.
  • Family New Year’s Eve party: a buffet, bubbly for the adults, magic, games and a disco from entertainer Gary T Davies, finishing at 12.30am. This is the only party on this page that takes children. A £20-a-person deposit is due when you book.

Dinner rather than a party

Two country gastropubs in the district are open all day from 12pm to 11pm on New Year’s Eve. Both serve New Year’s Eve specials from 12pm to 9pm and ask for a minimum of two courses a person after 6pm:

Both close at 11pm, before midnight. Neither is a place to see the new year in.

Getting home

Trains on New Year’s Eve 2026 will finish earlier than normal on some routes, according to National Rail. The operators have not yet published their 2026 times. Last year:

  • Merseyrail’s last trains to Liverpool and Ellesmere Port left at about 8.30pm.
  • Transport for Wales started closing down its services from 9pm.

On New Year’s Day, Friday 1 January, Merseyrail ran a Sunday service last year, while Transport for Wales ran a full mainline service. The Chester trains at Christmas page has the day by day detail and will get the 2026 times when they are published.

None of the three park and ride sites runs on New Year’s Day. Parking is on the parking in Chester page, and road closures are on Chester roadworks and travel.

Still to be confirmed

  • Last trains on 31 December 2026: operators publish from October.
  • Any public event: none announced as of 24 September. We will check again in early December.
